About Animalpedia
What Animalpedia is
Animalpedia is an animal encyclopedia built to be easy to read. Each page covers one species and has the same layout.
How pages are written
Animalpedia pages are researched and drafted with the help of an AI assistant. Claims carry source numbers, and each page lists its sources. The site owner reviews the structure, sourcing and data. Pages are not fact-checked line by line by an expert, so they may contain mistakes. Check the sources, and use Suggest an edit to report an error. When an expert has reviewed a page, a note at the top of the page explains it.
- Claims have sources. The Sources section at the bottom of each page lists every source used, with a link to each one.
- Unknown. No reliable data has been found for the animal.
- Disagreements. When sources disagree, the page gives the range or names the disagreement.
- Primary sources first. Papers, original descriptions and official databases come before encyclopedias. Secondary sources are marked as such.
- Habitat colour. Each page is coloured by where the animal lives. The inner colour is its main habitat, and a second habitat, if any, colours the outer frame.
Found a mistake? Use Suggest an edit in the page tools or at the bottom of any page. Every suggestion is reviewed before a page changes.
Are you an expert who wants to help review an animal? Use Review this page in the page tools or at the bottom of the page.
How photos are used
All photographs are used under the licences of their authors, and each caption names the photographer and licence. Share-alike licences (CC BY-SA) require that copies of the photo keep the same licence. Some photographs are licensed for non-commercial use (CC BY-NC); those used here have the photographers’ permission. Animalpedia is a free, non-commercial project, and the photo credits page shows the licence of each photo.
Photos are resized or cropped to fit the pages, and each caption says when a photo was cropped. A resized or cropped copy of a CC BY-SA photo stays under CC BY-SA. Each photo's page shows its licence and details.
Base maps are from Natural Earth. Dots on range maps are record coordinates from GBIF; only the coordinates are used.
To see the credits for every photo of one animal, use the photo credits page.
